Halloween presents an excellent opportunity for unusual creativity. Nine members of the Alumni Association of Northwest Arkansas Community College met for two hours in the Bentonville Campus' Student Center on Monday evening, 26 October, to take lessons in carving more intricate pumpkins from Laura Cates, an NWACC researcher whose hobby is extreme pumpkin-carving.

Laura is very serious about her pumpkin carving. She arrived with specialized pumpkin-carving tools and books of pumpkin-carving patterns. "I have patterns for all levels of expertise," she explained. Cates only uses the most complicated patterns when she carves her own pumpkins.

For two hours, the eight women and one man laughed, poked and sawed their way to very interesting pumpkin designs. When asked why she was spending her Monday night carving pumpkins, one woman said simply, "Because it's fun." Spooky music from Vampire movies played throughout the event.

The steps Cates taught her attendees were:
1. Thoroughly clean out the pumpkin.
2. Tape a pattern on the surface of the pumpkin.
3. Us a pointed instrument to poke holes around the gray areas of the patterns (areas of the pumpkin that will be cut out).
4. Remove the pattern a little at a time as you connect the small holes with a black magic marker.
5. Cut out the smaller areas of pumpkin first; then proceed to cutting out the larger areas.
6. Carefully remove the parts of the pumpkin you have just cut out.
7. Clean out the pumpkin again, hold it up for applause, then put a candle in it and take a photo.

The Alumni Association of Northwest Arkansas Community College is a relatively new organization. It was started last year by Rebecca Hudson, an employee of the community college and herself an NWACC graduate.

This event was the first of -- hopefully -- many entertaining monthly events to come.
