There are two types of aortic valve problems: stenosis and insufficiency. This clip discusses both types in detail. For videos and more check out http://www.emedtv.com/.

  • I´ve got a bicuspid valve too. I do a lot of sports, for example I m able to ride my bike for 110 km or jogging 30 km the next day. Heart rate about 40 bpm. Sometimes I worried that I may harm my valve with this, but my cardiologist said that it´s no problem.

  • great video! thanks a lot!

  • ya I love to weight lift and they all tell me that its purely bad news - my cardiologist said light is ok - do you think that moderate or heavy weightlifting would make it get worse faster? - and they recently found my valve isnt bicuspid its actually a tir leaflet but one leaflet is shorter than the rest - do you get that a lot as well and would that be better then per say being bicuspid?

  • Don't worry too much. It takes a big leak in a valve to cause a big problem. I scan hearts for a living and see this all the time. When I was 26, I was in training for the job and they found out I have moderate aortic insufficiency (aortic regurgitation.) My cardiologist told me to definitely get checked up regularly, which I do, but I'm fine. I was in good shape before it was caught and I'm in good shape now. I'm 35 now and it hasn't worsened at all. I can still do lots of cardio, too.

  • btw i am very athletic and can with stand hrs of cardio. even with this- i was also wondering why no one caught it sooner - is it possible it just started leaking? Do you know the average life span of someone with this? Your help would be appreciated so a preemptive thanks is in order

  • hey so i was wondering.- Im a 19 year old female and they just discovered that i have a bicuspid valve that is causing me to have aortic regurgitation - mild ( right now ) back into my heart. For the most part I am asymptomatic and am fine in everyday life. At times I become light headed and have mild chest well not pain but odd feelings . How dangerous is what I have and if I eventually need surgery how long do man made valves and biological valves last. I am going to a cardiologist soon.
