The film follows Ruth's unorthodox journey with Rufus as she strives to combat the voice and regain her job.

Rufus May is a maverick psychologist. He believes there is no such thing as schizophrenia, that medication can destroy lives and that there's nothing wrong with hearing voices. Rufus is an authority on the subject. He was diagnosed with acute schizophrenia aged 18.

In this powerful and thought-provoking film, BAFTA-award winning director Leo Regan, takes a challenging look at how society deals with mental illness, using an innovative mix of contemporaneous documentary footage and dramatised scenes. To protect her anonymity, Ruth is played by BAFTA-nominated actress Ruth Wilson and some details have been changed.

With figures suggesting as many as one in four people suffer from mental illness at some point in their lives, the film prompts the question, how far can people who hear voices also continue to live a normal life?

  • I hope she continues seeing a therapist. I don't hear voices or take meds and always think it's wise to have someone to talk to. I'm not too convinced she is cured by this method either...

  • The point is that its not about being cured, I think we can get too bogged down with the idea that people have to become normal to be happy in life and for some people this isn't going to happen...and why should it?

  • True. psych meds are harsh but some people find their meds calm them, and help them function better. It depends on the person.

  • I agree LeeAnne I think there has to be a balance as with most things in life and it absolutely depends on the person. I believe people should have complete choice in such important matters and that all options for therapy/ support should be made available to them. Unfortunately at the moment this does not happen and more often than not people are simply medicated without real understanding of their difficulties and without regard to ill effects of dependence and side effects.

  • thanks 4 uploading v interesting, am sure having friendly patient support, being taken out in nature, listened to and the meanings analysed helps, along with learning to live with voices.

  • Amazing! Being bipolar, and having been in therapy, and on medication for the last two years, this video truly made me hopeful. I am amazed by Ruth's bravery and Rufus's determination to help heal her by using such a progressive approach.

  • @jenni560 Your pretty smart : )

Science is the pursuit for the truth in tangible things.

Philosophy is also the pursuit for the truth, but its intangible.

Both lead to God, because He is Truth.

  • This was great, Rufus is hella sexy, Ruth is gorgeous, resist the demons from within, even if they do make you laugh. HAHAHAH

  • @rockafeladave science is a religion, at least it's definitely my religion, but god exists in it too

  • There is a voice muting silencer trick mentioned on the intervoiceonline forum in the home remedy thread. Muting, you still get the imaginations but no audible garbage, which helps, totally eliminates the confrontations, attacks, slander.

  • I found this video when searching for videos about schizophrenia, and it's truly fascinating, tthanks for uploading :) I wish we could have an update on Ruth's condition/life....

  • I feel so happy now...

for a long time up to about a year ago now I was seriously considering going to see a doctor because I kept on thinking people were hearing my thoughts and whispering the things I was thinking and giggling in a really creepy way... out of feer of being committed I rode it out and it's not really a problem any more. I guess it is much harder for some people, especially if you have a voice actually telling you to do things - I guess there arn't a lot of Rufus's out there.

  • Thanks very much for this jenni560.

I Youtubed Dr May after hearing an interview with him on Radio New Zealand National (public radio) a couple of nights ago. Very interesting indeed!

And my, Ruth Wilson's performance in this is honestly about the best acting I've ever seen.

    Great stuff.
