In this installment of our series The Truth About Germany, our intrepid reporter Michael Wigge investigates the story behind one of the best-known German words used in the English language. 1 of the first kindergartens in the U.S. was built in Belleville,Illinois. It as well as most schools in the area only taught German.Eventually laws were passed that they had to teach English and kindergartens became popular in the midwest, spreading to the west coast as people migrated.By WWI German was the second language and because of the war it was dropped from general ciriculums.
