Birth of a Nation, 1915, USA. A silent "classic," technically brilliant but rabidly anti-black. A "realistic" retelling of the Civil War and the aftermath. Portrays former slaves as unable to be civilized because they are little more than animals. Note how this film portrays white women, especially Southern White women. Think of how white women's virtue has always been depicted as the one "treasure" men of color have hungered for, a treasure that white men must defend at all costs. Why? And is using women's purity as central to the sanctity of all that is important purely an American ideology?
How does race play into all we discussed? What are the stereotypes about black men and white women depicted here? Are they still effective today?

  • This is what I do when black people try to talk to me

  • So the white girl would rather kill herself than get a Mandigo-style dick down? Yeah, sure.

  • And to think, Hollywood hasn't gotten much better since then...

  • The "brother's" warning? If I'm not mistaken, that is a woman.

  • Thank God for New Hollywood.

  • Maybe he really wasn't going to hurt her, all that he wanted was to ask her for bananas or the nearest KFC :)

  • RUN BITCH RUN

  • He said he wasn't going to hurt her, why'd she jump? What a stupid girl.

  • "Sir, there's a problem. We need black people for this movie, but nobody wants to work with real black people, seeing as how it's the age of Jim Crow an' all." "How 'bout we just dip Steve in mud?" "This man's a genius! Give him a promotion!"

  • Awfully cheerful music for when the "grim reaping begins."
