Peter Gelb, general manager of the Metropolitan Opera, moderates a 2008 discussion at a CUNY symposium about his decision to stage John Adams 2005 opera Doctor Atomic for the first time in New York City. He discusses the Mets production with Adams, director Penny Woolcock and set designer Julian Crouch. The session includes a video clip of baritone Gerald Finley, who has sung the role of J. Robert Oppenheimer at the Met and around the world.

  • If I remember correctly, two friends have told me that the bomb's explosion is in fact inaudible. I hate to ask if it has something to do with the psychological aspect of hearing something that is visually (a) trauma (of beauty?) in a pure form (a.k.a. the sublime). I looked at NYT photos and couldn't help but think: "piece of the sun," that even science could claim it to be. (The NYTimes audio if I recall correctly didn't go into the sound aspect of the bomb; Mr. Adams didn't seem to either.)

  • Fuck Gelb. Sellars was robbed of the opportunity to direct this opera at the Met.
