Started by a student initiative, the University of Virginias Community Garden hopes to be a space for both Charlottesville and the University to learn more about organic gardening. Keeping with the agricultural traditions of the Universitys founder, Thomas Jefferson, the garden hopes to help foster the growth of community as well as food. The objectives of this garden are as follows:
To provide a valuable educational resource to UVa students, faculty, and staff;
To serve as a resource and link to the greater Charlottesville community;
To model the most economically, socially, and ecologically sustainable farming practices available to us, while preserving an integral part of the landscape and the local economy;
To provide UVa students, faculty, and staff with the opportunities to work in a garden and to learn the skills needed to produce food, experiencing its joys and challenges; and
To make UVa a model of organic gardening and sustainability.
If you would like to join the UVA Community Garden volunteer email list for regular updates and volunteer opportunities, please send a note to uvacommunitygarden@gmail.com or visit our blog at www.uvagarden.wordpress.com.
This community garden is a sign of the changing landscape of agricultural education in America. Run and organized by students, this garden is strongly supported by the UVA administration as it embraces the Jeffersonian agrarian philosophy.
Comparing Joe's operation to Tyson/Purdue and actually the health of Joe's birds vs. the others is NO CONTEST. Tyson/Purdue is like Frankenchicken whereas Salatin's birds are 100% creatures of God.
