The packed house joined together in singing the civil rights anthem, "Lift Every Voice," led by Professor Rudolph Byrd and Emory University sophomore Garrett Turner. A rousing finale to Ms. Walker's public talk.
Author-activist Alice Walker visited Emory on April 22-24, 2009 in celebration the public opening of her archives and the accompanying exhibition titled "A Keeping of Records: The Art and Life of Alice Walker".

I remember learning this song in grade school; I could barely get through singing because I was always so moved by its meaning. And I don't know where it came from. I was young & no one had taught us anything about the song (which was shame in and of itself), but it spoke to me.

This song deserves a full rendition of all its verses. This video at least does this. It showcases the lovely words.
