Java is "heavyweight, verbose, and everyone loves to hate it," but Wall still thinks you should know it.

You're new here aren't you? Facial hair is to programmers and sysadmins as tails to Saiyans.

Re: HTML not being a complete language...yes that is fair enough. Neither is SQL, depending on whose definition you choose. In my role both are must-haves.

Sorry for being pedantic, but I thought HTML is not strictly a programming language. R is an interesting choice... ahh, an economist, now it makes sense. I get the last four, considering your situation, but why the javascript?
In my situation, (lethalsub scratches his head) - C, python, perl, javascript... brainfuck (no, seriously, it depends on your situation).

I didn't pretend to know the answer... I don't. However, I still support my question of "Who cares?" because no one cares (except you, I assume, since you asked).

programming in java is like eating 100 pounds of shoeleather, while C is eating 1 pound of steak.
can't disagree there.

As he says, the Top 5 depends on your situation.
Javascript I agree with. But where I am, the other 4 would be SQL / HTML / Visual Basic / R.
