Vid #4 Nick Mulone

The Apollo Theatre of St. Marys is fast approaching our one year anniversary on May 15th and we would like to give the community the opportunity to share our memories of the changes that took place at the theatre over the past year and a half.

We purchased the Diamond Theatre with plans of cleaning what was there and remodeling what we could. In December 2008, we became introduced to Nick Mulone, manager of the Mulone Theatres (Cheswick Theatre and South Pike Cinema) in the Pittsburgh area. The competition of the Mills Mall Cinema had seriously hurt the theatre that his father had opened in 1948, and Mr. Mulone had been forced to close the two-screen complex while keeping the four-plex across the street open. He had heard of us fixing the old theatre, and he made us the incredible deal that he would give us everything in that theatre as long as we could take it away.

Through a friendly business handshake, we removed all the furnishings from the twinned theatre. Five stays in Pittsburgh and three fully loaded U-Haul trucks later, and we returned to our own theatre in St. Marys, ready to give the community a big city theatre.

Unfortunately, due to the competition from the Mills Mall Cinema, Mr. Mulone was forced to shut the doors on the remaining four-plex on November 5, 2009 after more than sixty years of entertaining locals. Our hearts go out to Nick Mulone and all of the struggles he endured in having to make the decision to close his remaining theatre. We would also like to wish a warm hearted thank you to Mr. Mulone, to whom without his generosity, we would have never been able to open the theatre the way it is today.
