Harvey, IL Fourth of July Parade 1972

Here's 8mm silent footage that my grandmother shot of the 1972 Harvey, IL 4th of July parade. It was shot from the intersection (south, facing north) of 154th and Lexington. After the parade footage is some brief footage shot (between 1972-74)from the front porch of 15361 Lexington (not far from the location of the parade footage). The house is one of the few still standing in this area today. At the end of the clip is some brief footage shot from the front yard of an apartment building located around 15278 Center. This footage is from July 4,1972 as well.

I lived less than a half a block from where this was filmed ,in 1972 on the corner on loomis and 154th the optimist club used to sell christmas trees in the good old days, but now harvey is a crime ridden hell hole.

this was once a vibrant hardworking middle class white community at one time, up until the 1970s when White Flight decimated it. we went back in 1990s and our old neighborhood from Ashland to Page to 155th was pure black ghetto. not a screen or storm door left on a house and all one-way streets clogged with junked cars. trash everywhere, SAD sad.

we got out in the White Flight when the blacks began the race riots along Page and Wood Sts... we lived on Paulina by 150th.

@CookCountyDissident Thank you for posting that. Liberals ruin everthing! Detroit is absolutely right. The truth is the truth, whether you like it or not. When Harvey, Chicago Heights, Dolton, Riverdale, and Blue Island were majority white (like all sububrs should be), it was much safer. All of the homes were in better shape and business wasn't just fucking blues clubs, chicken shacks, and other bullshit. I will never forgive the people that let this town and its people rot like a corpse.

Bet you kiddies of that generation went to Dixie Square Mall too...take a good look in the sidebar, and we can all take a good long look at what happened to that, for good example. I've never been to Harvey, I live near Illinois (in Iowa) but never been there and I wasn't alive in '72, but this is a sad reflection knowing how Harvey ended up :(.....
