Sound artist Joe Banks interviewed for BBC TV Scotland music programme "The Beat Room" in 1998. The interview relates to recordings of usually VLF band electromagnetic / radio noise induced by live mains electricity, the sun, lightning, VLF "whistlers", domestic appliances, IT technology and industrial hardware, railway and metro systems etc, produced by Disinformation and released (by the record company Ash International) on CD and LP between 1996 and 1999, described as "electronic wildlife recording".

These ideas had a huge (and usually unacknowledged) influence on many art projects after being pioneered by Disinformation, notably on "Electrical Walks" by Christina Kubisch (who exhibited alongside Disinformation in "Sonic Boom" at London's Hayward Gallery).

An interview demonstrating the electromagnetic induction principle used in "Electrical Walks" can be seen here...

Album notes describing the ideas explored by the Disinformation "R&D" CD in 1996 can be found here...

  • that tower sounded pissed

  • HAARP ROCK!

  • Great work, so much music relies on the introduction of electrical distortion. It's good to hear someone investigating this stuff.

By the way, what sound is JHLKJHLKHLK?

  • 'Interference of art and science'. Your damn rite!

    That's future!
