I've only watched the new Doctor Who, but then I started watching some of the classic ones.
I watched City of Death and Romana immediately becomes my favorite companion.

@Dubzoomember Agreed 100%! Unlike the little balls of fluff who some stupid writers have been attempting to hook the Dr up with. Including the vile River. She is no where near the Dr's equal. she is a joke. She is no time lady. Romana was. River is not as smart as the Dr and she learned from an antique Tardis? Romana did better then the Dr in school and she considered the Tardis to be archaic. Therefore any knowledge acquired from it is passe compared to the other time lords. What a joke. RME

It was obvious that the Doctor and Romana were meant for each other. She's his intellectual equal, she seems to be the only other Gallifreyan he gets along with (unless Susan counts) and there's none of those inter-species relationships that are frowned upon in some parts of the Universe.
