Neglect is not always intentional by the perpetrator (what we call passive neglect) but it still has a negative effect on the victim. This is a clip from the Consequences DVD, which is a training resource for domiciliary care workers and Personal Assistants.

  • This is an excerpt from a training DVD which has two endings, one of which assumes criticism of the family and leads to a poor outcome for everyone, while the other shows that a more sensitive approach recognises that the family needs external support and ends up with a more positive outcome.

  • This DVD seems to confuse the idea of passive neglect... to me it seemed very biased at blaming the family who had moved Bill into their home. I understood the importance of highlighting what passive neglect is so that workers can recognise it, but the way it so dramatically drew attention to the family seemed very overdramatic. There didn't seem to be any mention of the fact that the family may need extra support to look after Bill due to their own commitments.
