Terrific. Hines at his best:) --

Same type of costume they put on Lawrence Tibbett for this aria. That stupid hat!

Great bass, human being and a teacher.
my father has sang with Maestro Jerome Hines in "Faust" as Faust back in 1960s, it was an incredible experience, he said.

the best American bass, period

I was privileged to accompany Mr. Hines in a concert in the 1990's. His voice and interpretations were still incredible in his 70's (his height -- 6'6"--was also quite impressive!) I still use him as an example of singing excellence for my college-aged students. What a VOICE!

One of the best anywhere!

Check out the Pide Piper performance from about 1958 by Van Johnson where all the music is from Peer Gynt. They copied this look. Actually, Jerry Hines had his own dark red Mephisto costume, which I saw him wear twice. Very Victorian. He was a great actor and singer and person, RIP
I don't care for this production at all, but Jerry is amazing. It's clear why he had the longest running MET career.
