Part 1 - Tim Carey Introducing Methods of Levels

In this short clip, Tim explains the basic principles of the Method of Levels (MOL) as well as providing a short introduction to the theory underpinning MOL -- Perceptual Control Theory. Watching this introduction will help you understand the type of therapy that MOL is as well as the general steps that are involved in conducting an MOL session.

Tim Carey

With a background in education, Tim is a clinical psychologist who has been learning and investigating Perceptual Control Theory (www.pctweb.org) for over 15 years. As a clinician and researcher he developed the original ideas of the Method of Levels (MOL) into a transdiagnostic cognitive therapy and uses MOL extensively. Along with his colleagues he used MOL in primary care settings in the NHS in Scotland over a 5 year period and conducted evaluations of the therapy as it is used in routine clinical practice with standard NHS patients. Since returning to Australia he has used MOL in both private practice and the public mental health service. He uses MOL with all his patients and is able to work with patients who have complex or comorbid presentations in efficient and effective ways. Tim's indepth understanding of PCT and extensive practical experience MOL enabled him to write two books about this therapy. The first, The Method of Levels: How to do psychotherapy without getting in the way (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Method-Levels-Psychotherapy-Without-Getting/dp/0974015547/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1321381239&sr=1-1), is a detailed explanation of both the therapy and the theory. The second, Hold that Thought! Two step to effective counseling and psychotherapy with the Method of Levels (http://www.newviewpublications.com/), is a short introduction to therapy which covers all the basics in a light, easy-to-read style. MOL is a respectful therapy that takes the patients' world view as a starting point and focuses on helping them make sense of the life they are living as well as helping them develop new insights and perspectives in order to improve those aspects of their lives they have identified as problematic. Part of the delivery of MOL involves providing patients with the ability to determine the duration and frequency of the sessions they receive, within the limits of the service they are accessing, and this has led to dramatic improvements in service capacity and patients' access to the service. Tim continues use and evaluate MOL as well as supervising and training others in the use of MOL.
