The #662 Mettupalayam-Ootacamund Passenger chugs slowly toward Coonoor on the metre-gauge rack railway, laboriously pushed uphill by the Swiss steam engine 37386-X [built in 1920] on Oct.15, 2008 at 1120 AM, in rain and fog; the outer signal being barely visible to the brakesman of the leading carriage.
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2005.
V.M.Govind Krishnan's book: "NMR [Nilgiri Mountain Railway]-From Lifeline to Oblivion", documents the efforts of the public to thwart the moves of the Indian government to dismantle this unique railway, and keep it in running condition.
