Swimming butterfly, breathe every arm cycle, turn, breakout - 07/10/10 (Summer)

A year has passed since I swam the butterfly stroke in this local outdoor pool during the summer of 2009

My body hasn't changed all that much since last summer, thanks to all the tai chi, chi kung and other exercises I do year-round to stay in shape.

By studying these "feedback" videos, I constantly work on improving, refining and polishing my swimming technique. Some things I can do better now than I did last year. For example, my turns are becoming smoother. The timing is better. I get a better spring off the wall. I travel further under water before surfacing to take my next breath of air.

On rare occasions, when there are no other people in the pool, just me and the lifeguards, I get an opportunity to take some videos of myself in the water. This was an overcast day, rain threatening. Since nobody else showed up at the pool, I was able to use my camera.

In this recent swimming video, shot during the summer of 2010, I am 59 years old. I am practicing the butterfly stroke, taking a breath during every arm cycle. I'm also working on my turn off the wall, into the butterfly "breakout."

I don't swim during the other three seasons of the year when this outdoor pool is closed. However, the daily exercises I do year-round on dry land help me stay in shape, so when summer rolls around again, I'm ready to jump back into the water and start swimming again.
