This is Southern White Crane. It is believed to be the predecessor to Japanese Goju ryu, as Gogen Yamaguchi had spent much studying and fighting WWII in China.
Apparently this style has its origins in Yim Wing Chun, who while observing a crane fighting. However, this style's power comes from the shoulders, back, arms and qigong, as it is believed that in close quarters, there is not time to use stance or waist power. It specializes in various finger and palm techniques.

I just recently read about the origin of white crane. Fang Chi-niang's father was a practioner of Monk Fist and despite being an accomplished martial got jumped by a gang and died from his beating. Distraught she vowed revenge but did not have anyone to continue the martial arts training her father was teaching her. One day she saw two white crane's fighting, evading and striking. She concluded that she would study them and develop a new type of kung fu or so the story goes.

Thank you for sharing. Can be hard for some karateka to grasp the connection to Chinese Kung Fu and this video made the connection of Okinawan karatedo to Fukien White Crane Kung Fu. Thank you very much. One can really see Sanchin kata at times in this video, as well as hearing something very similar to lion breathing if not lion breathing itself as practiced in karatedo.

Tai Chi probably evolved from a broader Long Fist style... of course, anything we say today is from our own conclusions and best educated guesses, from whatever sources we trust and our own thought processes. my personal opinion- tai chi evolved from longfist, & ZSF made it the anti-martial art martial arts style- a way to deal with other styles. he was the ultimate enlightened brat. anyway, nice documentary.

Okinawa not japan....different culture and language as well as kingdom back then. There japanese now but still are considered there own people...Think hawaii...its an american state now but was an independent country before....japan didnt "learn" karate till the 1920's....so the correct statement would be "the art expanded into okinawan karate" not japanese karate. lol as the art was developed in okinawa from chinese sources...while japan had jujutsu and kenjutsu type styles not karate lol
