Most of us saw The Neverending Story as kids, but there probably aren't many folks out there who have read the book it's based on. Ever heard of Sikanda? That's the name of Bastian's sword. Every heard of the Many-Colored-Death? Did know that when Bastian travels to Fantasia he conquers the Ivory Tower and engages in a brutal siege with a rebellion army led by Atreyu? None of it made it to the films, least of all the atrocious third movie.
I've read Michael Ende's book cover to cover and it's NOTHING like the movies at all. The colors are richer, the choices tougher, the monsters more terrifying, the stakes far higher. It's my favorite book and every time I reach the last page I want to start over and read it again...and it deserves cinematic justice. If Hollywood is going to make films out of The Dark is Rising, Harry Potter, and frikkin Spiderwick Chronicles it can make a decent remake of this film, which is perhaps the one film in history that could only benefit from a remake.
The Neverending Story film of my mind would be a far greater tale then the old film. The music would be grander and worthy of a story about all imagination, none of the pop music from the original feature. There would be battles too; the book has a surprising amount of them. This is a story, in my opinion, that deserves as much love and attention as Lord of the Rings. The world is as grand and deep, the themes are surprisingly mature, and the whole tale is ultimately a blanketing examination of the real and unreal, and what happens when both worlds meet.

Now then, what does the trailer mean?
It's a bit of a plea. If anybody in films by chance sees this, I'm offering an opportunity here. Remember Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and how it's remake broke the bank? The Neverending Story is that big undiscovered trilogy that could be the ticket to cinematic glory. I'm trying to show in this trailer that a remake of the film wouldn't just be a copy. So many, many things were overlooked, so many interesting things, that this story practically demands a decent film associated with it.

You'll notice for instance the green guy at the end of the trailer. That's Atreyu. In the book Atreyu has green skin!

GO READ THE BOOK! It's great fantasy with more then a few things to say about reality.

THANK YOU FOR WATCHING!

  • I'd hate Never ending Story if it had this Lord of the Rings/anime style. The whole appeal is its different from the rest visually. It has a bit of that German expressionist feel and the bizzare creatures and designs. Also the trailer is all action packed and epic feeling. I didn't get that from the book. Yeah there was a battle, but it paled in comparison to the setting, the characters, and the story. The book mostly focused on creating a world, not basking in action.

No argument. At the time I couldn't express that very accurately given the materials I had to hand.

But what I was trying to get across was that remake on Neverending wouldn't have to be a kiddie movie. There was a much more dynamic, deep, and adventuresome tale that had yet to be told.

Oh then that's completely understandable. Man I'm nervous about this reboot. I'm against it because remakes are almost always terrible, and I'm afraid they're going to ruin it with modernity and CGI, but on the other hand, I'm always hopeful that they'll make something on par with the original and respectful to the source material without being afraid of having dark moments. I used to love darker aspects to movies as a kid and I turned out fine.

I'd rather it be more like Lord of the Rings then Narnia. Not in that there'd be wall to wall action, but that the aspects of the world would be crafted to look lived-in, unique to the people and places. Narnia seemed to me to go for flash over substance, but the best kind of fantasy is not the kind that continually draws attention to its fantastic elements IMHO.

I might make another trailer with the new movie Immortals. That has a great sense of dream-like atmosphere.

  • I enjoyed the film more than the book. I was looking forward to reading the book considering how much better it was supposed to be, but it was so different from the film. It was a good book though.

  • @Pommit

Um...why did you like the movie better?

The book was different because it was more complex, had themes that made sense.

You should have liked the book better BECAUSE it was different XD

  • I don't care how different the movie was to the book I grew up with it and I still love it.

  • also, very very nice video

  • im sorry, i cant allow bashing the first movie, its the only one out of the movies, the mini series, and the animated series, which actually has decent to good acting, atmosphere, subtly (in comparison to the others), actually conveys some sort of themes and ideas, and at times is emotive.

yes, it wasnt as great as it couldve been, but its the best adaptation we have right now, so please if youre gonna attack a story based on the book, pick one that is actually shit, i recommend the 3rd movie

  • hey! nice trailer. thanks for posting this... and i totally agree with you!! they really should remake this movie as you said... it would be a huge hit!! i hope it happens =D and youve inspired me to read the original book! thanks =D

  • @bloodrunsclear - Because I had a very certain idea of who the characters were and what the story was like and who the places in the story looked like, but the book is very different. It is very intricate but the characters are not that fantastical really and the book leaves less to the imagination than the movie in a sense. I think the movie was very epic. I thought it was a shame to find that the Empress KEEPS needing a new name and that people lose their mind in Fantasia, etc

  • @bloodrunsclear - Because I had a very certain idea of who the characters were and what the story was like and who the places in the story looked like, but the book is very different and doesn't really do much for the imagination. The best way to explain is that the characters are not that fantastical. Nothing about them seems that interesting.
