An in-depth intermediate tutorial on how to create a nuclear explosion in 3Ds max 4 and onwards without additional plugins. If your using an older version, use editable mesh instead of editable poly & activate animate on the mesh and directly deform it instead of using morpher.

This tutorial will hopefully teach you how to:
* model a mushroom cloud using splines + lathe + editable mesh/poly
* make 3 explosive materials using displace, diffuse & cellular maps
* make blend materials and apply UVW maps
* animate and morph a mushroom cloud using morpher
* model some fences using splines + extrude
* create a camera shake using dummy + noise position controller
* create an exploding particle effect using pCloud + pBomb
* add a radial blur to the camera
* add an object blur to the particle system
* add a glow effect to the head of the mushroom cloud
* make your own SFX in Audacity
* play sound in 3ds max

Tutorial is based of a text tutorial by Julien Vanhoenacker

The final result is a direct render from 3ds max (includes sound)

  • i watched 1-4 of this video for 4 hours (lol i know 4 hours) but it was worth it

  • dont worry, it took me about the same first time I tried Julien's text tutorial~=6 hrs to make the video :P (kept trying to get it <10 mins so itd be a single video)

  • aww, thanks for explaining to me eh :) but, um, whats a plugin? you see, i was using 3ds max 9 and i kinda mess up.. i suck, i know.. :(

  • plugins are extra extensions to a program (ie, like realflow makes semi-realistic water effects that 3ds dosnt do by itself). you shouldnt need to worry about them for this tutorial ;)

  • got a bit of a problem whenever i hit Meshsmooth my cloud smooths but it shows up at frame 0 as the full cloud so it looks like there isnt any animation going on, if u could help it would be much appeciated :)

  • it sounds like a keyframing issue. try deleting all your keyframes, ensure autokey and set key are all turned off, apply mesh/turbo smooth then setup your animation

    hope this helps

  • Interesting enough, the mesh explosion tech is pretty usefull and can outrun particle effects in performance an even quality with ease. Atm working on my own implementation of one, the mushroom cloud looks pretty realistic by now along with the skirt and shock rings (to be improved though). The only tricky bit I'm experiencing so far is the dust wave that's just a pita to set up sometimes, also the "leg" for the aerial explosions is pretty tricky to get working properly.

  • in rendering i cant see mushroom HELP!!

  • @Saraha1337 i had the same issue but i had just just turned off the morph like the smooth. You should try click the light bulb next the the morph option on you original cloud>!

  • Thanks, Just finished mine!

  • @Saraha1337 i had the same problem and solved it by dragging the meshsmooth layer on top of the morper layer.. you know up in the actionbox in the right top corner of the screen.

thanks for a great tutorial Cyphlix! :)

  • that was awesome

  • Hii ,, ive made this but there is a problem i cant smooth the mushroom anymore ,, cuz yoou said to put the smooth of o've did that but now when everthing is ready i cant click it on anymore because then the mushroom dont come out the ground anymore , please help

  • I followed your tutorial till part 2/4, animating it went to far for me..

Still thank you very much! By watching a part, pausing it and doing it yourself, makes me learn alot :)
