But after banking all that dough, to then ask for a first-liner's money on your next contract when you, your father, and your entire community knows you are not a first liner and are a product of the death of the once glorious Oilers franchise is another thing.
Mike Comrie has blood on his hands. He took what wasn't his, got upset that the tank ran dry, left, and came back when the entire league gave up on him. Of course he then played hard, he got found out. There was no other option
Mike Comrie stuck it to the Oilers when they were hurting. He REALLY stuck it to them. This was a team that had let several first-line players depart or be traded because they couldn't afford to pay them. That Mike Comrie hit the bonuses playing minutes he was awarded by default from those departures is one thing. That he used a loophole dug up by Mike Van Ryn's lawyers to become a UFA as a rookie and then told the Oilers he'd walk if they didn't max his first contract is one thing.
@jaskaram My apologies to a person who has never regretted actions of the past. The difference in the Comrie I see and the Comrie you see is that the Comrie I see came to the team, when nobody else wanted him, and worked his ass off to contribute every night until he got ill. You can live in a hate-bubble if you want but I support my team and I support my teams chosen players.
@lilfrnz Spoken like someone who can't remember the kick in the nuts this guy delivered to the city that raised him, fed him, and praised him, despite his obvious shortcomings.
He only came back because no one else wanted him. Crying home after failing to prove the thing that was the cause of him leaving in the first place. Guy is not a number 1 centre, will never be. #2 is even questonable, and is only on terrible teams
it's a shame there are still some haters from 2001 when comrie comes into the conversation - why hate on a small guy who plays big and works hard to prove himself even on the tail end of his career?
So much hope coming into that season. Almost like "The season that could have been but never was..."
But at least management proceeded with the rebuild and hopefully in 5 years everything is clicking for the Oilers and they return to cup status...
