  • Thought this was a new song. George is the man but Merle can tell it like he lived it.

  • Merle wrote it in 1969 It was first recorded in 71 by Hank Snow. Merle then recorded it in 74 and again with Willie in 87. And then not sure when George did it.

  • Great version . . . I've been looking for this for a long time . . . I agree it sounds better then with Willie, George Straight's take on it is good, but it's Merle's song after all . . .

  • Yeah it is Merle's song he wrote it. Funny thing is he was not the first to record it.

  • Did Hank Snow really do this?? I missed that, and I thought I was a pretty good country music historian. Still good to hear it again!!

  • @coleyman1 Yes Hank Snow did it. I put his copy here on youtube. Give it a listen

  • Your Quite right, Merle wasnt the 1st to record this wonderful song, but at that time,

he was in one of two most productive phases of his career... Silver Wings, Okie ect,

thats why it took so much time,It must be remembered that Merle Haggard is a

Musical genius, even pop stars FINALLY know this, and world critics,Justin

Timberlake was around last few weeks taking pictures of him! But the core fans

knew this for a long long time...

  • One of my top 5 favorites. I have the LP but it's worn! I love classic country and Merle is my favorite! Thank you

  • it would be wonderful to hear "the girl who made me laugh made me cry"

  • @oldecountry You might be surprised at how many Merle songs are out there that were made hits by other artists.

  • Please post the rest of the songs in this album! The songs here are what i consider the nuggets of Merle's songs.

  • love Merle and George both,,,but I do prefer George's version.

  • @Bamaboompa It wouldn't be intersting to hear Kenny to put a spin on anything, especially a song from someone like Merle, who is so far superior to him.

  • Of the three listings for this song, merle's is the best.

  • Even when George covered it in 87(?), both versions have that "country pop" sound when country was moving to the mainstream. As a c/w dj at the time, it's not a criticism, just a statement of fact. I wouldn't mind hearing it as more c/w less pop with "strangs" instead of strings.

It would be interesting to hear K Chesney put a spin on it.

  • @oldecountry Thanks a bunch for posting this song! Please post the rest in the album I missed 'em all. Thanks again.
