Final Fantasy 6 (known as Final Fantasy 3) is one VERY buggy game. This is one of my favourite bugs just for its concept.

For those of you who don't know the game, Shadow is a mercenary who you can hire for brief periods in the game. Unfortunately once the story is about to advance, Shadow is typically unreliable and will leave your party. Turns out that it's possible to have this happen when Shadow is alone, leaving you with a party of zero characters. It's a very long and involved process, so here it is for your own viewing.

Due to Youtube's 10 minute policy, I had to edit out a few large chunks of the video. The Lete River raft riding and the Serpant Trench areas (where you have random encounters with aquatic monsters) have been cut out in their entirety. To shave just enough seconds to get me under the limit, Figaro Castle transport had a few seconds cut out.

This video has been played under an emulator with modifications. I have control of the random encounter rate and have set it to zero to prevent those annoying random encounters entirely, except for the one on the Veldt.

The video ends with the game crashing or otherwise locking up entirely.

The game starts from a saved state from Catastrophe's run which you can find at the tasvideos.org forum.

  • how'd you do all that without getting into combat?

  • I have a little module loaded into snes9x that dynamically changes cheat variables while the game runs. Nowadays we'd just use Lua to do that, but before I wrote something custom in C.

  • Why is there a merchant on your party?

  • Because Locke steals someone's clothes for a bit of the plot, then the player decided he liked it so much he left South Figaro without changing back.

There's also a moogle in the character roster where Celes should be.

  • Shadow leaves, Gau returns to the Veldt to live amongst the monsters, Terra's laid up in a slum motel with the magical hangover to end all magical hangovers, and the rest of the heroes are resigned to walking around in random directions within a rebel sympathizer's house.

Smooth road to world domination for the Empire, I'd say!

  • He's worn out his welcome, and your game is over.

  • @XinKotetsu I think Gau was wearing the last pair available.

  • You can get to the Veldt at that point in the game? Wow, I didn't know that. I thought the Lete River would just take you right back to Narshe, like it does with Terra, Edgar and Banon.

  • I just finished this game a couple days ago, and didn't know about this glitch. Awesome!

  • Shadow: "I've worn out my welcome."

    You: "The fuck?"

  • I've worn out my welcome. Why did I even walk up to this town in the first place?

  • All these years later and I'm still learning new glitches in this game.

  • @GarlandFraser you are a moron

  • Put some sprint shoes on for god's sake man!
