  • This is why I didn't go to Talbot. But seriously, Oneness is not Modalism, and people need to stop saying that. They are different.

  • @takitheterrible I agree and disagree. It all depends on what Oneness person is explaining their doctrine. You probably a Dynamic Monarchian, or a Modalistic Monarchian. In my opinion, a dynamic monarchian is equivalent to an adoptionist christology; which is just as bad.

  • @MaddDeacon I am neither. I have a Tertullian's view.

  • @takitheterrible :

I don't understand how you are interpreting Tertullian. Tertullian stated, "Thus the connection of the Father in the Son, and of the Son in the Paraclete, produces three coherent Persons, who are yet distinct One from Another. These Three are, one essence, not one Person, as it is said, “I and my Father are One,” in respect of unity of substance not singularity of number.".....

  • @takitheterrible......(continued) Tertullian basically invented the term "trinity", and developed the basic foundation for explaining God as revealed in scripture as Father, Son and Spirit. Again, I'm not arguing with your statement, just seeking clarity. Thanks

  • Trinitarians often sarcastically ask Oneness believers "was Jesus praying to himself?" Well, Trinitarians have the same problem. If you believe God is one BEING, then when one "person" within this "being" prays to another person, then you can just as easily be ridiculed as believing that God was praying to HIMSELF. The "persons" are all part of the same "He" according to trinitarians.

  • I understand your criticism, but scripture reveals that the Son prays to the Father, and does the will of the Father, therefore, it is simple to say that one divine person relates to the other divine person. And since God is immutable, and there are no accidental properties within the divine essence, only essential properties, it seems best to conclude the God always exists as distinct divine persons, Father, Son and Spirit.

  • @MaddDeacon I agree that Tertullian invented the term Trinity, but I don't think he invented the theology behind it. I personally don't believe Jesus is the Father or the Spirit like other Pentecostals, but I din't see them as "family" as many Trinitarians say. I don't expect to see three People in Heaven. They are manifestations of One Person, who is revealed in the Person of Jesus Christ. The Trinity is so absurd in light of the Old Testament. Why stress Your oneness if You are three?

  • @MaddDeacon Tertullian coined the tern "Trinity" AFTER he had become a Montanist. At first, the church rejected the notion, because Montanists were "modalists." I personally don't think they were, nor do I consider them a heretical group. Rev Jesse Hurlburt has a great argument for this view in his documentation of church history. I believe that there is a distinction in manifestations, which is what Tertullian was getting at, but I don't think they are three different persons in the sense today
