History Tara's Refuge was founded by John and Patty Cashman in 1999 on five acres of land in Mt Shasta, California. It is a place of refuge, a quiet sanctuary with a family meditation temple offering a place for teachings, weekly meditation groups and community gatherings. There is a traditional Tibetan Buddhist stupa blessing the area. A stupa is a Buddhist shrine or reliquary representing the enlightened mind of the Buddha. This stupa was designed and consecrated by Tulku Sang Ngag Rinpoche. A field of lavender surrounds the temple and outdoor prayer wheel.
