Depth, "cynicism", "irony" and "humor" are terms not easily associated to Facebook. However, in this book it is a reality, since the author intensively uses them to answer seriously though avoiding unnecessary and superficial formalities- questions like: What is it about Facebook that makes it so compelling and fascinating? Why, beyond the cultural or social class one belongs to, is it so hard to stay out of this first major mass phenomenon of the twenty-first century? What makes a seemingly simple page to add followers without stopping and grow into a power factor can tip the balance in a presidential election like in the U.S. or France with the impact this may even imply in world politics and economy?
Even though these questions seem simple to answer, the result is more than exciting, because through this book you will begin a highly interesting and entertaining journey through every nook of Facebook to review and scramble while looking to unveil the mystery.
Naturally, as with any dissection of such, there is a high risk that what is observed may become unsuitable for those most susceptible and impressionable. Not so much blood that can run, that is (although metaphorical but in generous doses), but for the ridiculous and the striking contradictions in which we can recognize ourselves in such a sarcastic way, in a virtual society with extemely strange habits such to to call "friend" someone you have not seen in your life, or assume that many people reading what someone posted in "What are you thinking?" is to go a step further towards the realm of collective telepathy.
While this book may identify both critics and defenders of the biggest social network in history, it is not comfortable or complacent text: the analysis is deep, and findings on behaviors observed in both users and the same executives of Facebook can become uneasy, since censorship, privacy of data and death are some of the many issues that don´t escape although imperceptible to the naked eye- the author's analysis of this unprecedented event in the web 2.0.
Thus, the reader will be immersed in the "behind the scenes" and will know not only the present but the future of a phenomenon that is not strange to virtually any culture or socioeconomic class of all those that are part of this movement that is growing at unprecedented pace, adding each day half a million people to their club.
In short, this is one of the first books in the world to analyze Facebook, and the first to do it from a human perspective, and avoiding the mere enumeration and description of their functions and applications. With a definite and up-close opinion with self-criticism, while ensuring many hours of laughing out loud.
