My paraphrase of a fourteenth century Welsh poem by Dafydd ap Gwilym. All of my paraphrases of Dafydd's work are available as 'Dafydd ap Gwilym: Paraphrases and Palimpsests' on Scribd.

  • Birdsong.........there is nothing finer than a nudge awake in the new day by a single solitary bird. My fave is the Blackbird who sang to us every morning in France and brought their family to dine at my table.....27 different songs they have and this made me so homesick for my old life in a medieval village deep in the richest Dordogne.

The video is beautiful with ever changing trees and their canopy.......subtle and mesmerising , esp in full size screen..

  • @ranicat100 Yes - birdsong on a spring morning is one of the pleasures of living in England... Thank you for the comment, and for liking this! My favourite English songster is the blackcap - I once wrote a poem in Dafydd's style in praise of this bird - and included a recording of the bird itself with the reading. (I keep saying 'English' like that because I spent the first 25 years of my life in Australia - where the songs of currawongs are very different, and just as gorgeous!)

  • I'm glad you have discovered Dafydd through me. As you can tell, he is a lifelong source of inspiration for me. I first found a book of his poems when I was on holiday in Wales with my parents, as a teenager - and this was after having known them in prose form for some time, as they appear in the Penguin Classics Celtic Miscellany.

  • Wonderful, reading and so evocative. Beautiful rhymes. Dafydd ap Gwilym is a new name for me, and a great discovery. Thanks, Giles
