  • Certainly 8cm (3.1in) is the recommended fresh water ice safety limit as prescribed by StatsCan, but that assumes worst-case cold-ice conditions. The beauty of (approximately) impurity-free ice is that the load is distributed over the entire ice surface, which is quite large. This means that despite having a lower flexural modulus, the overall stress per area of the ice is significantly lower. Now, I'm not an engineer, and so my math may not be correct. I will defer to one should one arise.
