Three spirited gentlemen were observed earlier this week launching a peculiar craft at the Walnut Creek Access. The boat was a hand crafted model patterned after the Panatela Steam boats of the 1930's and 40's. This particular boat was built in 1989 and although, at first glance, the hull appears to be wood, it is actually aluminum with a beautiful handcrafted wood interior. The engine and boiler in the center of the hull were also built in 1989 and patterned after the original design. It was interesting to watch these gentlemen stoke the small boiler and build steam to where there was enough power to turn the large inboard style prop. A little on line research quickly revealed that these period steamboat reproductions have quite a following with plans available for many styles.
