my views on this are such that I hardly need a context, we are surrounded by group-think, and this has to be distinguished from all group thought, that is, individuals collaborating on thoughts through reason and specialization. By group-think I mean an eagerness to take sides, decide facts based on who you are associated with rather than evidence. I am not sure what to call this, so sometimes I think of it as "sidism" or "associationist logic", as in "side taking" and "thinking in terms of associations" in the sense of "guilt by association".

This sort of thinking is perhaps also a better example of why will is important to me. I see people giving up their will too much, therefore, though there are many great limits on will, if I were to emphasize them it would only be to acknowledge them and discuss the ways those limits are overcome. We need to strengthen our will.

And I see need to not allow indiviudality and group collaborative thinking to conflict. That is why I derive a moral system, which is behavioral responsibilities among a group, from an individualist morality, so called self-interest. Doing this puts individuality and collective interest on the same roots, and makes individuality the root of collective awareness.

  • I think I get what you're saying. From my angle on it, I don't see the problem in teamwork or collaboraton. Those things do not really require freethought and individuality to be sacrificed, in fact they work better with them. Whereas us-vs.-them mobthink does. Good video.

  • yeah, I used to be a little negative about all group activity but I came to realize that bias was an over reaction to group-think. A team of people collaborating is a thing of power and beauty, and you can tell the difference by if free thought is part of it or not.

  • Forgive my quirky love of the subject again, but I think a great example of that kind of teamwork was actually the Constitutional Convention. The forefathers constantly fought with each other in that meeting and the result was the creation of the first free society in the world.

  • P.S. I meant us-vs.-them mobthink requires freethought and individuality to be sacrificed. Sorry.
