this sounds like a big uhaul truck or something, not a mini van!

This is Toyota refusing to admit to a huge problem, most of these engines sound like this. We have one of these vehicles where I work that sounds about the same and is still under warranty and Toyota has refused to correct the problem. I'd be very disappointed if I bought a new vehicle and the engine sounded that bad!

I have a 2007 rav4 v6 with over 100 000 miles on it. It also has a similar noise when cold. After some seaching on the net, it appears to be a "normal" noise for this type of engine and will not affect it's reliability. Mine starts great and does not consume a single drop of engine oil. Engine idle is smooth and steady. I use Amsoil 0w30 synthetic oil.... the engine seems to be a bit more quiet with synthetic oil.

Geez, that engine sounds like a Diesel. Even after warm up it sounds bad.

Very nice video. Our 2008 does the same with 93k but we don't have any warranty. Have you made any progress? At first I thought it was a dirty injector, then a bad exhaust gasket. I didn't know about Piston slap until now. Thanks.

So, did they fix it for your? I would really like to know. Having the same problem on a 2006, still under warranty. Or if you have any other helpful information... any tips at all, it would really help. Thanks,

NO way in effin hell that's normal....I'd take it in, demand a cold overnight startup and demand that the toyota warranty guy come start it with you there.
UPDATE: I had an oil analysis done and there was no sign of engine wear taking place. I did meet with a regional server rep for Toyota. We looked at about 4 other similar aged Siennas on the lot and they all did the same thing when cold. I was able to get an an extension of 2 years and 24,000 miles on my warranty. It's getting cold again and the sound seems worse than it was last winter. I'll do another oil analysis early next year to see if the piston slap is causing any engine wear.
