On Jan 9th, 2009 CKKW AM1090 moved from AM to FM and re-branded as KFUN on 99.5FM. On March 23rd the life of the 9 phased towers near Ayr, Ontario came to a crashing end.

I remember when these towers went up back in 1974 as part of a frequency change from 1320 to 1090. Engineering had massive issues attaining Industry Canada approval for the night time pattern due to re-radiation from numerous area metal structures.

Anyway here's the time-line of the demise of the 9 tower array.
Towers 1, 4, 7 were down at 10.21 am
Towers 2, 5, 8 were down at 11.46 am
Towers 3, 6, 9 were down at 12.22 pm

Thanks to Dave Garbe and the CHUM Radio K-W engineering team....and to Bill Dulmage for passing on this piece of History

  • How were the towers brought down?

  • The last set of 3 probably gives the answer ;) The riggers used a gas powered cut-off saw. I will not say more which I hope you can appreciate and is also why the video has no close-ups.

  • Feel free as long as you include the basic text and credits
