This is a song I wrote that tells the story of Private John Marvin Steele who was a Paratrooper in World War II and fought in the battle at Sainte-Mere-Eglise, France, in Normandy, on D-Day. Pvt. Steele's parachute became caught on a church steeple and he remained there for several hours while witnessing his comrades being shot out of the air. Here are the words to the song:

"The Angels Of Sainte-Mere-Eglise"
by Larry Whitler

John Marvin Steele
Had a story to tell
From the north part of France
In Normandy
In the early hours of D-Day
Preparing to jump
Je suis American----
Je suis American---

The people of Sainte-Mère-Église
Remember that day in their hearts
And their streets
The liberation of Normandy
Vive la France
Nous somme libre---
Nous somme libre---

And the bells tolled
And the guns fired
And a barn burned down
And from the light of the fire
Hitler's Nazis were pickin' 'em off
As they fell into town
The 505th Parachute Infantry
Left their blood on the ground---

John Marvin Steele
Drifted down to that hell
Where the angels of Sainte-Mère-Église
Kept him from meeting a certin death
Down in the street
Gloire 'a Dieu---
Gloire 'a Dieu---

And the bells tolled
And the guns fired
And Private Steele hung on
For his life
Hitler's Nazis could not hold them off
And they met their defeat
Heaven in France was returned
To the angels of Sainte-Mère-Église

And the bells continue to toll
And the children run free in the streets
And a mannequin trooper hangs from the church
In John Marvin Steele's memory

And the bells toll
And they live their lives in peace
Heaven on earth in the north part of France
For the angels of Sainte-Mère-Église

  • Thanks for this! John Steele was my step-grandfather. I was a young teenager when he died, still I remember him quite fondly. He was quite a character and great storyteller. I remember well the ones he told of his days in France. He walked with a limp from the gunshot wound that he received that day.

My mother, his step-daughter, and I attended the 60th anniversary of D-Day in Normandy. It was, and is, hard for me to believe that he was still remembered so lovingly after all these years.

Please let me honor your step-grandfather, a hero, my grandfather was also a paratrooper in Vietnam war (I think that is why I have a special very respect for paratroopers), he served in the Airborne Division of ARVN (the best of the ARVN), I am gonna join the 101st to follow my grandfather path.

  • if john martin steven was cut down

who is that up there still

  • @GERMANYisStrong Id like to see you land in the middle of a french village in the middle of a battle and having to land somewhere after jumping out of a speeding evasive plane with thick anti aircraft fire at only 500 ft. War never seems to go as easy as the films make them seem.

  • what fagot would dislike this?!??!?

  • Not to be mean but that guy sure fucked up the landing if he got caught in a fucking tower

  • @fotoman4u2 82 All- American

  • Outstanding Song (Thank You Larry) and Video. I did not get the Honor to have met Paratrooper Steele but as a Paratrooper with B2/325th Abn Inf 1973-77 I knew him well. I attended 60th anniv. of D-Day with C-47 Club a number of 505th PIR and 551st

PIB WW11 Veterans were in this group an extreme Honor to have been in their Company. All The Way "LET'S GO"

  • God Bless the 82nd and 101st! My Great Great Uncle was in the 82nd in Normandy and was in the 325th GIR and fought at La Fiere and survived. God Bless John Steele! God Bless America!
