Shot in the spring of 2008, this video highlights the struggle of some Harlem residents trying to save their neighborhood from a plan to re-zone the area. Some feared the re-zoning would literally change the face of Harlem. But as some residents rally to fend off the nightmare of unaffordable homes and shuttered local businesses, one West African immigrant finds his American dream in the middle of the battleground.
(Note: After this was shot, New York's City Council passed the Harlem re-zoning proposal.)
Thanks so much for watching. I think what Pape accomplished was outstanding! One thing that I left out of the story that was probably key to his success was the support and dedication he seemed to have from his family. It sounded like they were incredibly supportive, and he lived in a crowded apartment with extended relatives when he first got here. Just goes to show, it's important to support and push each other!

It's funny how an African immigrant can come with 2 pairs of pants and essentially nothing, to owning his own apartment in NEW YORK CITY.
Everything is twist turned upside down.
