The U.S. Postal Service continues to hemorrhage money. With the quasi-governmental agency on the verge of reporting losses of $10 billion for the fiscal year that will end Sept. 30, I share a useful political lesson in the form of an interview I conducted almost two years ago with a union retiree at a counter-protest to an an anti-socialism rally in the St. Louis area.

The only reason the USPS is in the red is because congress dictated in 2006 that USPS be required to pre-fund 75 years worth of future retiree health benefits over a 10 year period to the tune of $5.5 billion a year. Our deficit because of this is 20 billion dollars. We have paid in 21 billion dollars. If it were not for this pre-funding requirement we would have posted a profit. This dire predicament is congress' fault, not the USPS's. Check you facts before election day.
