The Appalachian State University Energy Center under the auspices of the EPA Methane to Markets grant will study and develop community-based landfill gas projects based on the success of similar ventures in North Carolina. Landfill gas is 50-60% methane, but the gas is typically flared off and released into the atmosphere as CO2. A case study for the wise usage of the gas is EnergyXchange in Burnsville, N.C., where a community of artists use the gas for glass blowing and the heating of pottery kilns. The state of Céara in Brazil has unique needs centered around catadores, or waste-pickers, living-off the landfill and sorting the materials for recycling companies for minimal payment. Agencies such as ANIMA and the Catadores Association help to organize the catadores to get the recognition and support they deserve as contributing members of society.
Very nicely put together. We are looking for more such case studies in order to be able to make concrete plan for implementation of similar landfill management project in Pune, India.
