Blackmor, England - 1837

I hated his stupid obsession for hunting. He went all over the world just to bring another stuffed head of whatever it was to our living room. There was a lion he killed on Africa, along with a buffalo, a leopard and a cheetah. A black panther from North America and a jaguar from Brazil were also standing in his collection of what he liked to call his "greatest prizes". I hated it whenever he went on one of this hunting trips. He was going after huge beasts, a lion could slice him in half if he didn't get the shot right. "I have a good aim, honey" he used to say to calm me down, and I knew he had, but still, I couldn't help but being worried sick until he came back home with every single hair that had left with him.

But there was one animal left on his collection and he wouldn't rest until it's head was also in our living room: a tiger. I never quite got his obsession with tigers, but he wanted one and he would have one. I begged him to forget about this trip, said he had enough stuffed animals already and that it could be dangerous going after a tiger. I had heard his companions saying that tigers are very smart and they don't give a crap if you have a gun and if you're human. When they start their attack they don't stop until one falls dead: you or they. Little did I know that the thing that would hunt my husband was far smaller than a tiger, but had the same attack philosophy and there was no gun to stop it...

He came back from India 2 months later, his smile bright due to what was left of the big feline he carried inside the carriage with him. A stuffed head and a rug of it's skin. Nicholas couldn't be any happier on the next months, he had his collection complete, our marriage was doing great and so were business. But after 3 months things started to get bad. At first I thought it was just a normal cold, it was winter after all. He started coughing more than he usually does, got tired easily and he was turning so pale it scared me. Until the day I found what he had been hiding. The maid was washing his clothes when she called me to show me something important. His white handkerchief, all stained with blood. When I asked him about it he said he had hurt himself and used the handkerchief to wipe the blood away. But I knew he was lying. The stains didn't look like something that had been wiped on it. It was sprayed blood. Just when that thought came to my mind, Nicholas had another cough attack. Guess what landed on the covers?

Immediately I called a doctor to check what was wrong with him, it sure wasn't just a cold anymore. The doctor just confirmed what I already thought it was. Tuberculosis. He said Nicholas had probably gotten it on India, while hunting the damn tiger. I tried not thinking about it, but I knew I'd have to watch my husband die slowly, having nothing to do to help him.

For ten months I watched as he languished a little bit more everyday. He didn't go to walks in the garden anymore, he barely walked down stairs, until one day he simply didn't got up anymore. I knew it was coming, but I preferred only forget it and tell myself he would get better, that he was going to make it. I hid all my fear of losing him behind a fake smile and took care of him the best I could, I cooked and fed him on his bed everyday telling him how much I loved him and how strong he was, that he would get better soon. He always nodded, but didn't seem to believe what I said.
