The Sony Playstation Portable (PSP) game console used the Universal Media Disk (UMD) to deliver games and movies (for a short while) for use with the PSP. The new PSP said to be available in June 2009 will not have a slot for the PSP. In my opinion, this is a good thing since the UMD is not a good delivery mechanism.

UMDs are horrible sense they can only hold so much but if they were made like blue ray disks it would be perfection we would approcametly 12gb games in our psps ass the normal blu rays hold up to 60gb
i knew it was coming october 1st, but he said it was coming in june and when i said "its July" i meant that(when i wrote the comment) it was july and that it was already past june and the psp didnt come out
Why I think UMDs are great: * I can swap them, share them, lend and borrow them * I can buy them second-hand * I can choose from many stores selling them, not one store online which happens to sell them * I can still download all I want with my current PSP, which Sony won't stop selling when the PSP Go is out.
PSP Go is for users appreciating a smaller device and bluetooth (with less choice, with non-removable battery, with smaller screen, with worse controls...)
Yes, Sony are releasing the PSP Go. Yes, they are paying much more attention to online distribution than they used to. Yes, UMD is going in the new model, but they will still sell UMDs and they will still sell the current fully-featured PSP (UMD and download ability).
I don't see why this is such a hyped thing. Downloads have been possible for ages on current PSPs. If you hated UMD, you could already download selected games and free demos.
what the hell do you mean UMD was a horrible design? The thing is a disk. And just like ANY disk ofcourse it would have exposed surface. Look at Gamecube disks, PS disks, and Wii disks, they ALL have exposed surfaces but do you hear us bitching about it? NO! Cuz it's all in the proper care of the disk. Don't want it dusty? Don't put it in anywhere there's dust. Or better yet, keep it in its freakin' case/box/carrying case. I mean that's what they're for.
