One cadet's hopes for Kosovo's future - 12 Feb 08

Russia has warned that if Kosovo declares independence it will damage security across Europe. The province is expected to announce its decision to break away from Serbia in the coming days, despite fierce opposition from Belgrade and Moscow. To help maintain stability during the transition, a security force has been established under the auspices of the United Nations. The first female cadet at Pristina's military academy tells Al Jazeera about her hopes for Kosovo's future.

Some of them were living in villages that are mostly Croat. (In Srem). When some refugees from Bosnia came and tried to steal their houses, police came and deported refuges to south Serbia. That is our police defending Croats in our land.

Just look at demografic maps. Croatia isn't multi ethnic anymore and Bosnia too. Serbia is. People of any nation feel good here. Because, being a Serb is being a great host. Of course there are many, like Shiptars that abuse that.

In that "golden time" Tito era, border with Albania was open. Albanians rushed to Kosovo, and south Serbia. In the same time communists didn't allowed Serbs refuges from WWII to come back to Kosovo. So it was golden era, for Shiptars.

Tell me, how many people Chetniks killed? And there's two factions calling themselves Chetniks. One, being many local bands avenging their dead. And other being Kings Army. It is not right to mix those two.

You wouldn't kill 10 croations living in the middle of 1000 of course, because they're no harm; they're going to assimilate in a century or so, anyway. Where you aim to attack is the places where another ethnicity is a majority.

I have serb friends as well. They're totally OK. Good people looking forward to a better life. It would be so much different if all serbs forgot the pain of losing something that didn't really belong to them.
