Daouda was one of my teachers. My virtuosity - some people say, I would have more than two hands - I owe to him. He was very strict with his gifted students. (Owing to this I had permanently mango-sized bumps on my head...)
A CD with Daouda (Tusia Fadenya - The Art of Daouda Diabate) is also available.

Here we play "DabaBa" (the big hoe) - a music for sowing. He starts alone but plays for three musicians: he combines the most relevant patterns from the solo, the base and the ostinato. Then, about one and half minutes later, I take over the ostinato and we speed up...

The Tuning of the Tusia balafon is something like E'-C'-B-A-F-E. The Tusia, like the Sambla and the Siamou, use the balafon for communication.

  • One of my favorite tuning - this is high math & science

  • I loooooooooooooooove these polyrhythms. The Diabates (and Dioubates) are the BEST. And ambi-directional??? Doesn't matter which way you sit to play? Huh. Amazing. I love watching their child come up real close...he wants to play!! Gorgeous.
