  • who's the rest of the cast?

  • Giulio Cesare : Andreas Scholl, Cleopatra : Rosemary Joshua, Tolomeo : Franco Fagioli, Cornelia : Sonia Prina, Sesto : Alice Coote, Achilla : Mario Cassi, Nireno : Damien Guillon, Curio : Renaud Delaigue.

  • I watched this production in Paris in 2006. The greatest disappointment in my life. I love baroque opera and in Brazil there no change I can see one... the production was of an extremely bad taste and poor, looked like a school theater production... I have many Andreas Scholl records and I really like him, but his voice was SO SMALL in the theater he could barely be heard, a real pity.

  • I do agree with you. TCE was too large for his voice.

In Lausanne in April it was much better, but I was closer to the stage too.

  • The "sand dunes" all over the stage was cork crumbs. Cork kills sound. In addition it produced lots of dust which caused a serious allergy with Andreas Scholl. That's why his voice sounded weak. A terrible production!! Irina Brook didn't know anything about baroque opera or da capo arias. The cuts were so numerous that the story fell apart.

  • No! this is not the Andreas we know the power isn't there, he sings it too fast and looses breath. A great pity

  • I love Handel's operas!!!!!!! This aria is one of my favourite arias by him ever!!!

  • I hear a good bit of fatigue in his voice. His upper notes that happen quickly, which are usually pretty spot on are rather sketchy in this recording. I don't know how many performances he's had before this or how much he pushed his performances (seeming this is later in the opera and he's had many fioritura arias already).

  • Agree with you...I mean is his voice but dosn't sound like him

  • no there is definitely something wrong there !! his low notes are completely squeesed like he's a sopranista ! whereas it's his low notes that are so characteristic of his voice... was he very ill on that day, or did he take the toll of singing to hight prior to that ? really listen to him singing to "jubilate domino" from buxtehude, and you will understand why i'm so surprised that he doesn't manage well at 1:36 ...

  • I can't recognise his voice, he looks like a shadow of himself. unless the mic was placed somewhere where it couldn't record correctly. I'm quite shocked actually. It's like him , but not "him".

Am i the only to hear that ?

  • Great! wonderful coloratura and exciting rendition.
