Robert J. Smith, Director of the Center for Private Conservation, explains in this short video how the modern environmentalist movement began in America. A celebrated author and environmental historian, Smith shows how the antiwar movement during the 1960s evolved into an anti-capitalism movement that pushed for public stewardship of the environment.

  • Good video.

You tube is up to its old tricks again. I gave your video the thumbs up but I guess your video is too controversial because they won't let my thumbs up register.

  • environmentalists are communists and should all go to hell

  • Capitalism is natural and not the problem, it's the government.

  • @DirtCrashr they said the same thing about labour unions and workers rights. If the corperatists had it their way it would be like 18th century england all over again with kids in coal mines.

  • @DarklingX perhaps, but the government certainly hasn't done much in terms of keeping jobs from going overseas, yes, better environmental standards will cost more, but if all making companies cleaner does is force them overseas, the government needs to step in an put a tax or something on that so it doesn't happen.

  • @AlternateArtisan Exploitation is debatable. Doing business with those countries has modernized them and made their currencies worth more. The problem is on a governmental level not business. Give it time as economic growth occurs citizens tend to want more freedom and democracy. It's something they have to do for themselves.

I would also have to say environmentalists are partially responsible for the exporting of industry in the first place.

  • @Sunshinethefox Really now? They protested the building of renewable hydroelectric dam that's just one instance I know of. We'll hurt our earth it is inescapable but we will make far more technological progress this way then hugging trees. As we advance it seems likely that we will learn to leave less of a footprint with whatever new tech comes about.

  • You don't have to abolish capitalism to achieve improved environmental standards. You just have to give it an incentive. Or in the case of whats happening right now. A penalty for not meeting enviromental standards.

  • @TheCrwilliams I would think enviromentalist are a backlash against greedy fascists who exploit other countries.
