  • @LadyReginaSmiles It's called 旦 Dan that refers to different kind of female chars - generally classified into old women, young nobles, young maid and those ladies who knows martial arts. In ancient time, women should stay at home, performing on stage is not decent for a woman. Therefore these 旦 characters were played by men as well.

  • It's also because the Chinese theater was exclusively played by men. So the actors doing female roles were really famous because the movements had to be perfect and THE VOICE had to be perfect and really really high.

  • There is a male character who always plays female roles. I am not sure of the Chinese word for that, but in Japanese he is called an onata and 90% of the time is a homosexual.

  • cool, man.
