Remember the days when you bought a 45 RPM and played the A side for the 2,000th time before wondering what joys (or horrors) were on the B side?
Well, after listening to the sensational "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore" ad infinitum, I flipped it over and heard "After The Lights Go Out" and it blew me away.
Brilliant vocals as ever by Scott and the lyrics paint the life of a broken heart lving in a tenement building, observing and listening to life of the building. I always have the picture of the scenery from the Hitchcock film "Rear Window". Listen and enjoy.

  • Lovely song, and THAT VOICE!! Now his music is so abstract it only makes sense to him and just a few others, unfortunately.

  • @pattiameo So true about his current "method". Self indulgent to the exclusion of his appreciative fans who love his rich, lilting bass baritone.

  • NO 1 EVER CAN COMPERE 2 THE WALKERS .

  • @bmckeeb1 Amen 2 that!!!

  • the most existential song lyrics ever..scott walker was a genius..

  • Agreed. Such a shame (and a loss) that for last 30-40 years both he as a performer, and the media to try to persuade him to perform, have avoided each other.

  • @bmckeeb1

This has to be my favourite WB song - brings back so many memories of my youth and young love!!! Beautiful.

  • As NME writer Keith Alston put it, this song is "Pure Walkerama".

When I first heard this song in 1966, I was living in a bed-sit in Leeds, nursing the wounds from a recent break-up. It has been one of my favourite songs since then.

It was written by John Stewart, a fourth Walker Brother who was with them when they arrived in UK. Unused to the right-hand drive UK road system, he stepped off the curb and was hit by a car, breaking his leg and ending his career with the Walker Brothers.
