Jan. 12 - The latest in electric-powered cars are being unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show this month but the vehicle that started it all is making a debut of its own in Germany. Engineers at a private museum near the city of Speyer, have recreated a working version of the world's first electric car, originally presented 130 years ago by two Englishmen, William Ayrton and John Perry. Rob Muir reports.
Once these vehicles get a longer range between charges and gas prices approach $5.00/$6.00 per gallon in the US, there will be a bigger demand.
It's a great idea, but we will need to reach a point where it's economical to use all-electric vehicle technology without requiring tax breaks to consumers and huge government subsidies to private companies in order to offset the higher costs.

There was an article in newScientist recently describing advances in battery technology by IBM's Zurich research labs and Battery 500 (USA manufacturers) which promise to increase battery capacity 1000 times, thus reducing bulk and increasing distances to petrol engine range.
Not on the market yet, however soon it may come to be everywhere, phone charge that last a week etc.
