My XT does a nice kick back at the bottom of the stroke and my heel hits the rear foot peg. Only pussy's who ride Hayabua's need the electric start.

  • you should kick the starter, not trying to tickle him. ;-)

  • @HennerJung Spoken like a 300 pound German man not a 120 pound American woman :)

  • "Only pussy's who ride Hayabua's need the electric start." ... yeah, but they don't have bruised up ankles and calves.... just sayin'...

  • @HennerJung

    haha owned

  • Sympathies. I still carry a round puncture scar in my right calf, just below the knee, from where an XT500 kick starter stabbed me. Foot slipped off the peg - not hard to do considering the weird tight trajectory of the starter - and caught a soft spot.

POS motorcycle, pretty much, like most of the Japanese trail offerings up until the 1990s. The Japanese don't (or didn't) care much for customer (or importer) input, and they designed and sold some real junk - XL250 was also crap.

  • Wow, that's nothing compared to how much my XT500 kicked back. I had one that had some sort of oil line to the head, I am pretty sure the engine was heavily modifed as it absolutely crapped on my other XT500s even one of my other ones with a rebuilt engine.

My one that would kick back, when it was running would have a flame coming out of the exhaust and one day that caused the tire to burst as it melted it :)

Other than that, listen to the others about getting this bike on top dead center.

  • i`ve owned 6 xt500`s and i can start one barefoot, easy

  • Great Motorcycle Had the SR500 easy to start if you understand the motorcycle.

  • stand on the bike properly and kick it from tdc and it wont hit you back a bike hits back when the valves are opened but not enough then when they close the cylinder is filled with a shed load of pressure

  • I will never kick start a bike like that again hurts real bad if you don't get it right.

  • a friend of my father broke his leg 2 times tries to start a xt 500
