A Makino fine hole sinker EDM prepares (80) 0.005" diameter start holes using 0.003" diameter pipe electrodes. Each hole is spaced on center lines of 0.0095", with final aspect ratios of 40:1.

Once the start holes are completed, a Makino UPJ-2 horizontal wire EDM is used to finish the holes to their final diameter. The UPJ-2 ran unattended utilizing its automatic threading capabilities to thread 0.002" diameter wire through the 0.005" diameter start holes.

This test was conducted at Makino's micromachining R&D facility. For more on micromachining visit http://www.makino.com/micro and view our latest case studies.
