Greetings in Christ to you Dino,
The monks did not try to sell land from Mount Athos. There was a property scandal by an Abbot from Mount Athos along with some politicians elsewhere in Greece (so the Greek News has told us).
Mount Athos is nothing like the Vatican. Mount Athos is purely Monastic and these good servants of Christ are the real deal.
Mount Athos is Holy.
The scandal to which you refer is unfortunate, but lets remember we are all human and prone to sin.

for all the people who are saying women should see mount Athos. the story goes that Mary arrived at Athos, called it beautiful and wanted it as her own. God said it would only be hers and no other woman would have it. This and the fact that male monks who swore to celibacy make it so that they won't tempted. The place was a refuge for women during the aftermath of the failed 1770 Orlov Revolt, during the Greek War of Independence in 1821, and Jewish families during World War II.
