Famous and not so famous Australians living in London in the summer of 1965 say why they left home. Narrated by Australian TV personality Rolf Harris, directed by Stefan Sargent. The program features: Dame Joan Sutherland, Sir Robert Helpmann, Jack Brabham, Brett Whiteley, Scobie Breasley, Keith Michell, Barry Humphries, Brett Whitely, Radio Caroline DJs, Jon Bannenberg, Ken Warren, Russell Braddon, June Bronhill and numerous Aussie dentists. The program was broadcast in Australia on 28th November 1965.
It proved controversial - Australians in the program said they preferred living in London, which provoked something of an outcry back home. It became such a matter of public debate that the program was repeated twice the following week

  • Joan Sutherland, one of the most acclaimed sopranos of the 20th century, a singer of such power and range that she was crowned “La Stupenda,” died on Sunday at her home in Switzerland, near Montreux. She was 83. October 10, 2010.

Full obit in the New York Times.

  • "they were hungry and eager with ambition" yes, very true of Brett Whiteley - seen here with his year old baby.

Brett & I worked together at Lintas in Sydney - 1959, where I was a junior account exec. and Brett was my friend in the art department. His uncle and I both worked at TCN Channel 9.

    Brett died just aged 53.

  • This is fascinating. It's all true, Australia's intellectual corruption still exists, bearing in mind I aint a Kathy Lette fan etc etc. Brett Whitely is such an amazing speaker. I wished I had met him. Among others on Whitely, I read that Blundell book, it's okay but @stefansargent, I wonder if it is that authentic?

  • The dentist has no bottom teeth hahaha , we,re on to you old mate haha

  • self loathing became an art form for them...nothing has changed.

  • @verziehen You are quite wrong. Humphries is a heavy talent whom Australians all over the world can be proud of. He's given great joy to a lot of people. Your attitude is like something from 30 or 40 years back when Aussies were obsessed with projecting the image abroad as sophisticated (and anything to the contrary was "giving us a bad name overseas") Do you honestly think people are so stupid as to imagine Les & Edna are typical Aussies? Be proud of Humphries. Apologize for Rupert Murdoch.

  • @verziehen what they say is an opinion as you say yours! You are both entitled and that is the beauty of opinion! Australia will always be the ocker/ kangaroo haven to the world. Little does the world know about Pitt Street/ The Espy/ Pavlova and the great way we call getting "pissed" getting drunk! I say let them think that as as Australians that is the secret we keep sacred! We let them think Russell Crow, and Nicole Kidman are "Australian", the joke is on them, be proud to be Australian

  • Rolf Harris created a myth that we are all from the bush & did us no favours by his wobble board & stupid songs he invented. This has to be the most pretentious rubbish on youtube. I lived in England for over 5 years & constantly apologised for prats like Rolf Harris & Barry Humphries on one hand & on the other snobs with affected voices like many on this clip. Humphries spends his semitransvestite life bagging anything Australian & his roots then marches in a protest about change! Hypocrite!

  • Its a part of life I guess to get old and get cynical. the young these days are cynical first and simple later. What would Brett have done if he saw the script of his life? Would he have killed himself or became careful and vigilent with his power and still be alive today? This film reminds me of that other great 's film "Tonite Let's All Make Love in London".

Great find! Do you have the Minutes interview?

    DL.
